THE POWER OF PLACE
Travel Writing
California Writers Club, Redwood Branch, Cotati
Sunday, Sept 14, 2008, 3-5 pm
Vividly described place is fundamental to communicating the significance, influence, and power of environment. Landscape can hold epic drama, define a people, hold intense history or wisps of memory. Careful, intentional depictions will strengthen your writing and delight your readers. Blending objective description with subjective perception allows us to tap into a deep, direct source of story. Environmental details add sensory texture and subtle layers which hint at elemental influences. As a writer, we select what to include, what to draw attention to, what to reinforce, and how to alter mood by what is changing in the landscape, or by what is missing. Interior landscape is fed, caressed, and refined by lucidly observing external landscape. Using short writing exercises, we will map our personal relationship to land, to evoke the power of place and wake up our readers' senses. We'll conclude with an overview of current markets and opportunities to publish in print and online.
Cindy Pavlinac is a fine art photographer, multimedia artist, writer, and violist. She works on location throughout Europe and North America visiting historic sites and prehistoric sanctuaries. Her travel writing and photo essays have appeared in over 600 publications, including Time Magazine’s Pictures of the Year, Martha Stewart TV, Where San Francisco, Forbes Magazine, Spirituality and Health, Family Circle, Delicious, Self, Healthy Living, Glamour, Body Mind Spirit, Site Saver, Environment and Art Letter, Woman of Power, Whole Person, Northern California Home and Garden, Marin Magazine, Utne Reader, Shaman's Drum, Artists Dialogue and as Principal Photographer in the books Labyrinths and Sanctuaries of the Goddess. She wrote a chapter, Death Valley Journey for Earthwalking Sky Dancers, Women’s Pilgrimages to Sacred Places.
Her writing awards include Gourmet Magazine for Travel, Maupintour Travel International, KINSA Kodak Journalism, Maynard Owen Williams (National Geographic Founder) Award, P.O.W. (Power of Women Writers), Young Writers Conference Cranbrook, Michigan with Joyce Carol Oates.

MYSTICAL BRITAIN AND THE POWER OF PLACE

An Earth Mysteries special presentation featuring stunning photography of ancient and sacred places, transformative live music, roadtrip tales.
Cindy Pavlinac & Martin Gregory
Saturday, Sept 20, 2008
Cindy and Marty will bring their Earth Mysteries presentation to our September meeting, with their stunning photography of ancient sacred places and live contemplative music. Cindy will lead us through the sensitization process for recognizing alignments in visible and energetic landscapes with photos of prehistoric and medieval sites in Britain, accompanied by Marty's music to evoke the symmetry and harmonics of mystical places. They will share secrets of using dowsing to shift awareness and enhance the travel experience, and to return with gifts of wonder and joy. The presentation will include The Power of Place, one of their collaborative productions with photography and music from their pilgrimage journeys.
Cindy and Marty have presented their slide/ sound extravaganzas at the West Coast Dowsers Conference since the mid 80's, and at other forums around the USA and Europe. Along with their magical pup, Merlin, all three enjoy road trips to powerful places and labyrinths.

Journey through eight archetypal landscapes: Ocean, the Keeper; Desert, the Determiner, Mountain, the Giveaway; Lake, the Mirror; Island, the Refuge; Cave, the Place of Initiation; Forest, the Protector and Provider; and River, which runs through and connects all.
Based in the ancient aboriginal wisdom of the Native Americans and Celtic Earth Mysteries, this workshop will feature in-depth exploration, easy meditation exercises, and fun visualization games. Like the North American Medicine Wheel, we learn wholeness by first isolating each direction and each land type into its specific qualities. Every landscape has unique characteristics which teach skills to recognize and create nourishing environments. Engaging our imagination in serious yet playful activities, we will explore our personal relationship to place and evoke the natural order and elemental power of archetypal landscapes. Through inspiring words, stunning imagery and contemplative music, we will travel the terrain of inner and outer landscapes, creating maps for our life’s path. Calling on travel experiences and sensory memory, we will dowse from the center of each land type to better focus our questions, evaluate answers, and unify our quest. Our workshop will conclude with ‘Mystical Britain,’ a presentation of slides and music of ancient sanctuaries in England, Scotland, and Brittany showing ancient site placement in honored landscape. Dress comfortably and bring a journal for writing and/or drawing. Art materials and handouts provided.

She is known as Our Lady of Guadalupe or Tonantzin in Mexico, the Mother and Patron of all the Americas, or as the Black Madonna in European Catholicism, Isis in Egyptian Africa, Crow Mother in the Hopi American Indian tradition, Tara in Tibetan Buddhism, Kali in Hinduism, Erzuli Danto in Vodun, Yemaya in Yoruban Africa, and Oya in Brazilian Candomble. This beneficent, towering dark female divinity appears as a powerful symbol of healing, diversity, fierce compassion and of the Earth itself. As the national Patron of Brazil, she is known as Aparecida, the one who appears, and is called the Mother of the Excluded. (conference details)

Multimedia artist and fine art photographer Cindy Pavlinac presents slides from her Photographs of Power and Grace Image Library, including sacred places in the USA and Europe, black Madonnas in France, and from her recent trek to Meryemana, Mother Mary's House in Ephesus, Turkey, with its holy well and 3 Black Madonnas.

STONEHENGE CIPHERS
Concise geometric patterns incised into a stone orb 5,000 years ago depicts maps of the prehistoric psyche, pathways of power, waves of Wyrd. This palm sized orb was left in the far north of Britain, a rare survivor of symbolic writing from the Neolithic culture of megalith builders. Raven, messenger bird of the dead, sits watching the living visit Stonehenge.

Labyrinths in Health Care
Cindy A. Pavlinac, MA: Archetypal symbolic designs such as labyrinths can function as visual examples of healthy relationships. Through the symmetry of sacred geometry, labyrinths invite us into the mythic levels of mind, tapping deep repositories of human memory and experience. Traveling as a pilgrim orients us to the essence and interconnectedness of all life and strengthens our sense of greater purpose and global community. Using original photography and music to evoke the sense of place, we will journey to sacred landscapes in Europe and North America to follow a meandering path from ancient sanctuaries to modern expressions of labyrinths in places of nature, worship, and healing, with special attention to labyrinths currently in use at hospitals and other health care facilities.
We will finish at the atrium labyrinth for a group walk.

A published author and former editor of 'Shaman's Drum' magazine and Marin's own 'Artist Dialogue', Ms. Pavlinac's writing and photography have appeared in over 300 publications including as Principal Photography for Sanctuaries of the Goddess and Labyrinths, and in Time Magazine's Pictures of the Year. A charter member of the Marin Branch of the California Writers Club, her January presentation will introduce eight archetypal landscapes through photos and writing exercises. Come prepared to start the New Year writing!
Vividly described place is fundamental to communicating the significance, influence, and power of environment. Careful, complete, intentional depictions will strengthen your writing and delight your readers. As a writer, you select what to include, what to draw attention to, what to reinforce, and how to alter mood by what is changing in the landscape or by what is missing. Through guided imagery and stunning visuals, Ms. Pavlinac will guide us on a journey through the archetypal landscapes of the imagination, including Ocean, Desert, Mountain, Forest. We will briefly explore each territory's unique qualities and gifts, then return to a multimedia presentation of integrated prehistoric British landscapes with original slides and transformative music by Martin Gregory. The inner landscape is fed, caressed, refined, balanced, and strengthened by lucidly observing external landscapes.

Artist Statement for this Exhibit: Photography <=> Technology
THEN: Kalamazoo College astronomical engineering/ art major with physics lab keys (shot lasers at camera, contorted polarized gel lens). Senior project Upjohn Pharmaceutical electron scanning microscope & printing officially discarded Polaroid negatives in full Zone System while managing Kalamazoo Arts Institute darkroom 1979.
First magazine photo assignment: Xerox Parc Alto Star computer & prototype mouse for Byte Magazine 1982.
First computer print from a photo: Versetec 40” x unlimited, Stonehenge (snuck in on weekends) 1983.
Photoshop 2.0 registered user 1991.
Solo exhibit of digitally manipulated photos (blue sky over telephone poles at prehistoric sites in England, bullet holes and cowboy graffiti removed from Southwest petroglyphs). Dozens of hours watching watch cursor, hand-coloring ancient carvings with mouse, saving often onto a fist-full of Magneto Optical disks which required my local service bureau to shut down their shop computers to daisy chain me in to RIP my file to the spanking new Fiery printer; files enormous 4 MB behemoths 1993.
NOW: iMac G5 flat screen with several 250 GB external storage hard disks and a big Wacom tablet with wireless pen, Photoshop CS wielding 280+ MB files, with source material from dozen original photos. Since my college work/study job in the AV department, I've been producing multimedia extravaganzas with hundreds of slides, dissolving every few seconds. Long time exposures with moving lights and etheric figures have long been my signature photographic technique. This new work is a still frame with multiple images partially dissolved, partially revealed, time exposed layers of place, pilgrimage and memory.

Midwest Labyrinth Festival, St. Paul, MN. October 25, 2003
Labyrinth Dreamtime
A slide/music extravaganza created by Cindy Pavlinac & Martin Gregory
Using original slides and music to evoke the sense of place, we will journey to sacred landscapes in Europe and North America to follow a meandering path of ancient sanctuaries to modern expressions of labyrinths in places of nature, worship, and healing. This 1/2 hour visual feast is being produced specifically to debut at the Midwest Labyrinth Festival with new photography and music, and opens with prehistoric rock carvings in Scotland and travels through Roman meanders, English medieval village greens, and cathedral floor patterns up to the current interest in labyrinths in North America, visually juxtapositioning images to layer seemingly divergent expressions of the sacred across cultures and time. As the closing convocation, Labyrinth Dreamtime will give attendees inspiring images to help ground and integrate the Festival experience, encouraging hope, health, and sweet dreams in celebration of labyrinths.

Mystical Britain & Southwest Spirit
Two slide/music extravaganzas created by Cindy Pavlinac & Martin Gregory
Using slides and music to evoke the sense of place, we will journey to ancient sanctuaries in Europe and North America to follow the meandering path of scared precinct building to modern expressions of labyrinths in places of nature, worship, and healing.
A personal relationship to land and Nature is fundamental to our health and the well being of our psyche. By consciously mapping external sacred landscapes, we learn to recognize places of health and how to make whole our inner soul landscapes, and to awaken the inner dowser. To rest in a place of sacredness is to be whole and to be whole is to be healed.

"I travel with a pilgrim's eye, inviting the inner soul landscape to be fed, caressed, refined, and nurtured by visits to external sacred landscapes."
|
|
|
|
"As an artist interested in expressions of the sacred, I travel as a pilgrim, questing for true spirit, legend, and memory, seeking unexpected alignments, remnants of balance, clues to ancient wisdom. As a photographer, I create images out of phantoms in the corner of my eye, working ceremonially, intuitively, and determinedly to communicate the beauty and power and enduring presence of place.
"Through photography I create layers of images to translate the experience and wonder of peering between the worlds with the mythic levels of mind into a visible effect. These images of ancient places and modern expressions of the sacred offer a glimpse of holistic systems of knowing, places built to nurture spirit and incarnate soul. To rest in a place of sacredness is to be whole; to be whole is to be healed. We are an awakening community dreaming together."
The artist talk 11/7/02 will feature Ms. Pavlinac's research and photography of European cathedral labyrinths, British turf and hedge mazes, and U.S. labyrinths, journeying to medieval sanctuaries in Europe to pick up Ariadne's thread and follow the meandering path of ancient labyrinths to modern expressions in places of nature, worship, and healing. She will show the multimedia presentations, Labyrinths of Grace & Spirit and Mystical Britain, featuring hundreds of slides with original music by Martin Gregory.
